Singular vs. Plural

In Spanish, the verb *gustar* (and therefore 'gustó') works backward. The thing being liked is the actual subject of the sentence, not the person. Think of it as: 'The movie was pleasing to me' (Me gustó la película).

The Special 'Gustar' Structure

You must always use a small pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) right before 'gustó' to show *who* felt the liking. 'Gustó' is the past form used when the thing liked is singular.

Required Pronoun

If you need to clarify *who* the 'le' refers to (since 'le' can mean he, she, or you formal), you can add 'A él/A ella/A usted' to the front, but keep the 'le' before the verb: 'A María le gustó el vino.'
