Confusing Commands

This form is used in two main ways: 1. When expressing desires, doubts, or requests about what 'you' (tú) do (e.g., 'Quiero que olvides...'). 2. When giving a negative command to 'you' (tú) (e.g., '¡No olvides...').

Dual Function of 'Olvides'

To tell someone 'Don't do X' using the familiar 'tú' form, you always switch the verb ending to the opposite vowel sound (AR verbs get E endings, ER/IR verbs get A endings). That's why 'no olvidas' is wrong, and 'no olvides' is right.

Think of the negative command as being slightly more 'formal' or specialized, even when talking to a friend. The 'olvides' form is mandatory after 'no' when telling a friend not to forget.
