The Dragon in the Tower of London

The Tower of London is very old and very cold. Arthur is a guard. He works at night. He walks near the high stone walls. The moon is bright and the city is quiet.

Arthur hears a strange sound. Scritch, scratch. He looks at the dark corners. He sees a big shadow. The shadow has a long tail and small wings.

It is not a bird. It is not a cat. It is a dragon.

The dragon is the color of the gray stone. It is very still. The dragon has one rule: it only moves when the city sleeps. Its eyes are like two gold coins.

Arthur is afraid. He has a heavy key in his hand. But the dragon does not move. It looks at Arthur. It looks lonely.

Arthur reaches into his pocket. He has a red apple. He puts the apple on the ground. He walks back.

The dragon moves fast. It takes the apple. Then, it looks at Arthur and makes a small sound. It is a sound of thanks.

Arthur is not afraid now. He has a secret. The Tower is not a prison for him. It is a home for a friend. Arthur smiles in the dark and continues his walk.
