The Bride Who Walked the Wrong Road Home
A2 · Myths & Legends
Everyone in the village of Ashford knew the rule. There were two roads through the forest. The road on the right went home. The road on the left went somewhere else. No one talked about where that road ended. They only said: Never walk it after dark.
Maren did not believe in old stories. She was twenty-two years old, clever, and a little impatient. On the night of her wedding, she stayed too long at her mother's house. Her new husband, Thomas, was waiting at their cottage. Maren was already late.
She took her lantern and walked into the forest alone. The night was cold and very dark. Maren walked quickly. She was thinking about the warm fire in her new home. She was not thinking about the road. She did not notice when she turned left.
Suddenly, the forest was too quiet. There were no birds and no wind. Even her footsteps made no sound. She held up her lantern. The light showed a long, straight path. On both sides, she saw dark figures standing very still. They did not move, but they were watching her.
Maren’s heart beat fast. She remembered her grandmother’s words: 'If you walk the wrong road, do not speak. Do not call any name. Turn around slowly and go back. The dead are polite. They will let you leave, but only once.'
Maren did not run. She did not call for Thomas. She turned around slowly and walked back the way she came. The figures did not follow. After a long time, the forest became loud again. She heard the wind and the sound of an owl. She was safe.
She reached her cottage and saw Thomas. His face was white with worry. 'I took the wrong road,' Maren said. She sat by the fire and held his hand. She still did not believe every old story, but she believed that one. Some rules are old because they are true.
