The Photograph in the Charity Shop Coat

Elena needed a warm coat. Winter was coming, and her old jacket was too thin. She did not have much money, so she went to the charity shop on Bridge Street.

The shop smelled like old books and soap. Elena looked through the coats. Then she saw it: a heavy, navy-blue wool coat. It looked strong and warm. The price tag said twelve pounds. She bought it.

That evening, Elena put the coat on in front of the mirror. She put her hand in the deep inside pocket. Her fingers touched something smooth and stiff. It was an old photograph.

She pulled it out carefully. The picture was black and white. It showed a young woman with dark hair standing on a beach. She was holding a small child. Both were smiling at the camera. On the back, someone wrote in small letters: “August 1967. Mum and me.”

Elena sat down on her sofa. The photo was not hers. It was precious. Someone lost it, and someone was probably looking for it. She looked at the happy faces. She made a promise. “I will find the owner,” she said.

The next morning, Elena went back to the charity shop. She showed the photo to the woman at the counter. The woman frowned. “An old man brought a bag of clothes last Tuesday,” she said. “He lives near the church, I think. But I do not know his name.”

Elena felt nervous. She was a stranger. Could she really knock on doors and ask questions? But then she looked at the photo again. The woman in the picture trusted someone to keep it safe. Elena had to try.

She walked to the area near the church. She went into a small café and asked the waiter about an old man who donated clothes. The waiter thought for a moment. “That sounds like Mr. Harris,” he said. “He lives on Beech Street. Number fourteen.”

Elena walked quickly. The wind was cold. At number fourteen, she knocked on the door. An old man with grey hair opened it. He looked tired.

“Excuse me,” Elena said. She held out the photograph. “Did you donate a blue coat to the charity shop?”

The man took the photo. His hands shook a little. He looked at it for a long time. His eyes became soft and sad.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “This is my wife. She died last year. And this is our daughter. I looked for this photo everywhere. I thought it was gone forever.”

Elena smiled. “Now you have it back.”

The man thanked her three times. When Elena walked away, the wind still blew, but she did not feel cold. She felt warm inside. She did not just buy a coat. She kept a promise.
