The Runner Who Stopped at the Finish Line

In December 2012, a cross-country race took place in a small town in Spain. It was a cold morning. The runners were fast, and the competition was serious. But one moment in that race became famous around the world. It was not because of speed, but because of a choice.

Abel Mutai was a runner from Kenya. He was very good. In the race, he was in first place. The finish line was very close. Then, something went wrong. Abel did not understand the signs. He thought he was at the end of the race. He stopped running and began to walk. But he was not finished. He was still a few metres away from the real finish line.

Behind him, a Spanish runner named Ivan Fernandez was in second place. Ivan saw everything. He knew he could run past Abel and win the race. But Ivan did not do that. Instead, Ivan slowed down. He moved next to Abel. He pointed his hand toward the real finish line. He told Abel to keep going.

Abel understood. He started running again and crossed the line first. Ivan finished in second place. After the race, a journalist asked Ivan, 'Why did you do that? You could have won.' Ivan answered, 'I did not deserve to win. He was the better runner that day.'
