The gate was open. Tomás stopped walking. He stood on the sidewalk and looked at it. The old iron gate of Mrs. Aldea's garden was always closed. Every morning for three years, Tomás walked past her house on the way to school. Mrs. Aldea was very careful. She never left it open.

Tomás felt his heart beat faster. He pushed the door slowly. "Mrs. Aldea? Are you okay?" The house was dark. He could smell cold coffee. Then he heard a small sound from the kitchen. He ran toward it.

Mrs. Aldea was on the floor. Her face was pale, but her eyes were open. "I fell," she said quietly. "Last night. I could not reach my phone. I could not get up."

"Everyone forgets things," Tomás said. He stayed with her until the ambulance arrived. He was very late for school, but he felt a new, warm feeling. He realized that a small detail can mean everything if you pay attention.
