The lawyer cleared his throat and looked at the two women sitting on opposite sides of the table. Elena, the older sister, sat with her hands folded neatly in her lap. Rosa, the younger one, was already crying quietly into a tissue.

"And finally," the lawyer said, "regarding the personal item described as 'the honey cake recipe.'"

Both women looked up at the same time. Their grandmother, Marta, had been famous in their small town for one thing above all others: her honey cake. She had made it every Christmas and every birthday for fifty years. People had offered her money for the recipe. A local bakery had asked her three times. She always said no. She always said it would stay in the family.

But "the family" had become complicated. Elena and Rosa had not spoken properly in four years. It had started with an argument about their mother's house — who should sell it, who should keep it, and who had done more to care for their parents in their final years. The argument had never really ended. It had just grown cold and quiet, like a fire that stops burning but still leaves everything black.

Now Marta was gone too, and here they were, sitting in a room together for the first time since the funeral of their mother. The lawyer reached into a brown envelope and took out a single piece of old paper. Even from across the table, Elena could see her grandmother's handwriting — small, careful, and slightly tilted to the right.

He placed it on the table. Then he picked up a pair of scissors and cut the paper cleanly down the middle. Rosa made a small sound of shock. Elena did not move. The lawyer placed one half in front of Elena and one half in front of Rosa.

"Your grandmother's instructions were very specific," he said. "She said, and I quote: 'They will only have the whole recipe when they decide to sit in the same kitchen.'"

He closed his folder and left the room. For a long moment, neither sister spoke. Elena looked down at her half. She could see the list of ingredients — butter, flour, sugar, salt — but the amounts were on Rosa's half. Rosa held the instructions for preparation, but without the ingredients, they were useless. It was, Elena thought, a typically Marta solution to a problem.

"She was difficult," Rosa said finally. Her voice was thick from crying, but there was almost a laugh hiding inside it.

"She was clever," Elena said.

Rosa looked at her half of the paper. "I can't make it without yours."

"I know." Elena paused. "Neither can I."

Outside the window, December light was already fading. Elena thought about the cake — the way it smelled when it came out of the oven, the particular sweetness of it, and the way her grandmother had always cut the first slice and given it to whoever looked most tired. She thought about how she had not eaten it in four years.

"I have a kitchen," Elena said carefully. "It's not very big. But it's enough."

Rosa folded her half of the paper and put it in her coat pocket. "Saturday?" she asked.

"Saturday," Elena agreed.

They did not hug. They did not apologize, not yet. But when they walked out of the lawyer's office and into the cold street, they walked side by side, which was more than they had managed in a very long time. The cake, Elena suspected, would taste better for the waiting.
