What She Chose Not to Say
A2 · Relationships & Drama
Her mother's eyes opened slowly after six in the evening. Sara was sitting in the chair by the bed. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Sara reached into her pocket. She placed the ring gently on the white blanket.
Her mother looked at it for a long time. "I found the box," Sara said quietly. "The letter. The photograph."
Her mother closed her eyes, then she began to speak. It was a quiet story. His name was Daniel. They got married on June 14, 1987. Six months later, he died in a car accident. He was only twenty-three years old.
"I never talked about him," her mother said. "Not to anyone."
"But Dad—"
"Your father always knew," her mother said. "He was the one who told me to keep the ring. He said, 'He was part of your life. You do not have to hide that.'"
Sara looked at the small gold ring. It represented thirty years of sadness, carried in a pocket.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sara asked.
"Because I didn't know how," her mother said simply. "Some pain is very old. It becomes part of you."
Sara took her mother's hand. When she left the hospital, the sky was orange and pink. She thought about her father, who kept a secret for thirty years because he loved her mother. She felt, for the first time, that she truly understood her parents.
