The Best Man's Toast That Stopped in the Middle

The wedding was beautiful. White flowers were everywhere and sixty people sat in the warm restaurant. At the front of the room, the bride and groom—Sofia and Daniel—held hands and smiled. Marco sat next to Daniel. He was the best man. His job was to give a short, happy speech. He had his notes in his pocket. He practiced many times.

But then Marco looked at Sofia. He remembered university. Years ago, he wanted to tell Sofia he loved her. But that same day, she told him she was moving away. Marco decided to say nothing. He kept his feelings to himself. Now, Sofia was marrying Daniel. Marco stood up and picked up his glass. Sixty people looked at him. He said, 'Daniel is my best friend.' Then, he stopped. The room was quiet. Daniel looked worried. Marco looked at Sofia and felt a door closing in his heart. He realized this was right. He put his notes away.

'Daniel is my best friend,' he started again. His voice was steady. 'He sees people clearly. He saw how amazing Sofia is from the first day. Sofia, you are brave and honest. Daniel, you are a lucky man.' Sofia smiled. Daniel grabbed Marco’s arm. 'Thank you, brother,' he whispered. Marco raised his glass. 'To Daniel and Sofia!' The room cheered. Later, Sofia asked him, 'Why did you stop in the middle?' Marco smiled. 'I found better words,' he said. He felt completely fine. The old story was finally finished.
