Era vs. Fue

Use 'era' when you are setting the scene or describing what someone was like. Think of it as the 'background' of a story.

Describing the Past

Spanish always uses 'era' (for 1:00) or 'eran' (for any other time) to say what time it was. You never use the other past form 'fue' for time.

Telling Time in the Past

If you can replace the English word 'was' with 'used to be' and the sentence still makes sense, you should almost always use 'era' in Spanish.

The 'Used to be' Trick

Extremely common; used in almost every conversation to describe how things were.

Mistaking it for the verb

Even though it looks like it could be related to the verb, as a noun, it is always feminine: 'la era'.
