A Complete Guide to Dates & Times in Spanish
Understanding dates and times is crucial for making plans and communicating effectively. This tool not only translates for you but also helps you learn the essential rules of the Spanish calendar and clock.
Writing the Date
- Format: The core structure is day of month of year. For example, `25 de diciembre de 2024`.
- Lowercase: Months (`enero`) and days of the week (`lunes`) are not capitalized.
- The First Day: Always use `primero` for the 1st of the month (e.g., `primero de mayo`).
- Numeric Formats: In writing, you'll often see the Day/Month/Year format: `25/12/2024` or `25.12.2024`.

Telling the Time
- Es la vs. Son las: Use `Es la una` only for 1 o'clock. For all other hours, use `Son las...` (e.g., `Son las cinco`).
- Minutes 1-30: Add minutes with `y`. For example, `Son las dos y diez`. Use `y cuarto` for :15 and `y media` for :30.
- Minutes 31-59: State the *next* hour and subtract the minutes with `menos`. E.g., 8:50 is `Son las nueve menos diez`.
- Period of Day: Use `de la mañana` (morning, until 12 PM), `de la tarde` (afternoon, until ~8 PM), and `de la noche` (night).
