The Penalty No One Wanted to Take

The rain started in the second half. By the final minutes of the match, the grass was wet and the sky was dark grey. The scoreboard said 1–1. Westfield FC needed one more goal to win the cup.

Then it happened. A Northgate defender pushed Marco inside the penalty box. The referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot. A penalty kick.

Coach Rivera walked to the sideline. "Who wants to take it?" she called out. Nobody moved.

Marco looked at his boots. He missed his last penalty three months ago. The ball went wide and his team lost. He still remembered the crowd going quiet. Danny looked at his shoelaces. Priya looked at the clouds. Fifteen seconds passed.

Then a hand went up. It was Bea. She was seventeen and played midfield. She was fast and smart, but she was usually quiet. She had never taken a penalty in a real match before.

"Bea?" Coach Rivera asked. "Are you sure?"

"Yes," Bea said. Her voice was calm, but her hands were shaking a little.

Bea put the ball on the spot. She stepped back four steps. She breathed slowly. The goalkeeper moved left and right to make her nervous. The rain fell harder.

Bea ran forward. She kicked the ball to the right — low and fast. The goalkeeper jumped the wrong way. The net moved.

The stadium exploded with noise. Her teammates ran to her. Marco grabbed her shoulders. "Why did you do it?" he asked. "You were shaking!"

Bea smiled. "I know," she said. "But someone had to. If I miss, we are a team. If I score, we are a team. Either way, we are together."

Marco understood now. His mistake months ago was not the missed kick, but feeling alone after. "Next time," he said, "I will put my hand up first."

They walked off the wet pitch together with the cup.
