One Gender for Both Sexes
In Spanish, 'hormiga' is always feminine. To specify a male ant, you don't change the ending; you say 'la hormiga macho'.
Always use 'La'
Even if you are talking about a male ant, you still use feminine words with it, like 'la' or 'una'.
The 'El' Mistake
Mistake: “El hormiga”
Correction: La hormiga. Even though many words ending in 'a' are feminine, learners sometimes try to make a masculine version ('el hormigo'), which doesn't exist for the insect.
