Part 3: El audio de Rosa

Exhausted at the hospital, Carmen accidentally forwards an old voice note from their grandmother into the chat — a recording Lucía was never meant to hear. Eleven minutes of silence follow, and Carmen cannot find a single word to send.

Tuesday. 14:18.

The train left the city at two o'clock. Lucía is in seat twelve. She looks out the window. The fields are flat and brown and very wide. She has not put her phone down.

At the hospital, Carmen's grandmother is awake. She looks at Carmen. She does not speak. Carmen holds her hand. It is very small and very warm. After a while, Rosa sleeps again.

Carmen puts her head back against the wall. She closes her eyes for a moment. She is very tired. She has been here since Sunday. Her phone is full of old messages — from the doctor, from a neighbour, from Rosa.

She opens her phone. She is looking for the doctor's message. She is half asleep. She taps the wrong thing. Then she taps again. Then she sees what she has done.

The audio is thirty seconds long. It was sent. There is one grey tick. Then two grey ticks. Then two blue ticks. Lucía has heard it.

14:52 — 15:03.

No one writes anything. The train moves. Rosa sleeps in the white room. Outside both windows — Carmen's and Lucía's — the same flat fields pass in the same pale light.

15:03.

Carmen types. She deletes it. She types again. She deletes it. She types a third time. She stares at the words. She deletes them too.

On Lucía's phone, the small grey words appear and disappear three times: 'Carmen is writing...' Then nothing. Then again. Then nothing. Then again. Then nothing.

15:03. Delivered.

The last two blue ticks sit under Rosa's voice. The train is thirty minutes from the village. Lucía has not replied. Carmen has not sent anything. The audio is there, very small, very still — thirty seconds of an old woman's voice, sent by mistake, that cannot be unsent.
