Lo Que No Dijimos

El hospital está tranquilo. Es casi mediodía. Lucía no se ha movido de la acera donde dejó de caminar. Sigue mirando su teléfono.

The hospital is quiet. It is almost noon. Lucía has not moved from the pavement where she stopped walking. She is still looking at her phone.

Lucía reads it four times. Two words. She sits down on a low wall. A bus passes. She types.

Lucía ve la foto. Se lleva la mano a la boca. Su abuela parece muy pequeña en la cama.

Lucía sees the photo. She puts her hand over her mouth. Her grandmother looks very small in the bed.

Una pausa larga. Diez minutos. Luego quince. Carmen está en la habitación con Rosa. Lucía está en la pared en la ciudad. Ambas están muy quietas.

A long pause. Ten minutes. Then fifteen. Carmen is in the room with Rosa. Lucía is on the wall in the city. Both of them are very still.

Carmen reproduce el audio. Lo escucha completo. Se sienta muy derecha en la silla de plástico.

Carmen plays the audio. She listens to the whole thing. She sits very straight in the plastic chair.

Carmen no responde. Pasan veinte minutos. Lucía camina a la estación de tren. Compra un billete. Se sienta. Mira la conversación. Escribe. Lo borra. Escribe de nuevo.

Carmen does not reply. Twenty minutes pass. Lucía walks to the train station. She buys a ticket. She sits down. She looks at the conversation. She types. She deletes it. She types again.

Carmen's reply comes in four seconds.

La palabra 'En línea' desaparece del nombre de Carmen. Se ha ido. Lucía mira fijamente la pantalla. El tren no llega todavía. La palabra 'no' se queda en la pantalla, muy pequeña, muy blanca. ¿Es: no, no lo sientas? ¿O no, no lo acepto? Lucía no sabe. El lector no sabe. El tren llega.

The word 'En línea' disappears from Carmen's name. She is gone. Lucía stares at the screen. The train is not here yet. The word 'no' sits on the screen, very small, very white. Is it: no, don't be sorry? Or no, I don't accept it? Lucía does not know. The reader does not know. The train arrives.
