Cuatro Minutos y Doce Segundos

Part 5: La versión real

In a night of late messages — just the two of them — Valentina and Diego finally say everything they've kept quiet: the fears, the people they've become, what they feel and what they no longer know. The ending leaves open the only question that matters.

Barcelona and Valencia. 21:47. Two hours have passed since Diego's last message. Two hours in which neither of them has written anything — not to each other and not to anyone else. Valentina has arrived at her apartment without clearly remembering the way. She has placed her coat on the chair. She has sat on the floor. And she has stayed there.

Valentina
Valentina

hey

Diego
Diego

hey

Valentina
Valentina

are you home?

Diego
Diego

yes. for a little while now

Diego
Diego

and you?

Valentina
Valentina

yes. I'm on the floor

Diego
Diego

on the floor why

Valentina
Valentina

I don't know. I arrived and I sat here and I haven't moved

Diego
Diego

I've been looking at a glass of water for an hour

There is a six-minute pause. Neither of them forces anything. The chat is still but neither disappears. Both remain online.

Valentina
Valentina

can I ask you something?

Diego
Diego

sure

Valentina
Valentina

do you feel like you've changed? in these months that I wasn't there

Diego reads the question. He gets up, takes the glass of water, drinks half. He sits back down. He writes.

Diego
Diego

yes

Diego
Diego

I think in these months I've become more serious. or more... closed off, I don't know

Diego
Diego

before I used to talk more. with you, with friends. now I spend many days without saying anything that matters

Valentina
Valentina

I've become different too

Valentina
Valentina

here I'm more independent. I like being alone, it doesn't bother me not having plans

Valentina
Valentina

and at the same time sometimes I get home and the silence weighs on me too much

Diego
Diego

and in those moments do you think of me?

Valentina reads the question. She doesn't delete it. She doesn't rewrite it. She answers in less than a minute.

Valentina
Valentina

yes. always

Diego
Diego

Diego
Diego

me too. for whatever it's worth

Valentina
Valentina

it is worth something

There is another pause. This time shorter — four minutes. As if the rhythm between them had changed. As if for the first time in months both were in the same conversation.

Diego listens to the audio. Then he listens to it again. On the table, the glass of water is still half-full. Outside, Valencia has truly reached nighttime.

Diego
Diego

thanks for telling me that

Diego
Diego

seriously

Valentina
Valentina

I should have told you months ago

Diego
Diego

yes. and I should have told you many things before you did

Diego
Diego
Voice message

Valentina listens to the audio once. She doesn't repeat it. Her eyes are closed. When she opens them, her apartment window is dark except for the city lights in the distance. The radiator hums behind her.

Valentina
Valentina

the thing about stopping letting you try

Valentina
Valentina

that's what I did, right

Diego
Diego

yes. but I understand why

Diego
Diego

now I understand it

Valentina
Valentina

and the train?

Valentina
Valentina

are you going to come this weekend

Diego's dots appear. They disappear. They appear. This time they take longer than before.

Diego
Diego

I don't know yet

Diego
Diego

I haven't canceled the ticket

Valentina
Valentina

Diego
Diego

I think we both need a little more time to know what we want to do with all this

Valentina
Valentina

yes

Valentina
Valentina

but are we okay? I mean... us, right now, tonight?

Diego
Diego

I think so

Diego
Diego

tonight, yes

The chat stays quiet for a while. Not uncomfortable — quiet. Both remain online. Valentina's radiator keeps humming. Diego's glass of water remains half-full. The night goes on.

Valentina
Valentina

I'm okay

Valentina
Valentina

Elena
Elena

and what's going to happen

Valentina
Valentina

I don't know

Valentina
Valentina

but tonight we do know something

Elena
Elena

what

Valentina
Valentina

that the two people we were before no longer exist. and that that's not necessarily a bad thing

Elena
Elena

I love you Valen

Elena

now go to sleep

Private chat: Diego and Valentina 💬

Valentina closes the chat with Elena. She goes back to the chat with Diego. The time on the phone is now past twelve-thirty. He is still online.

Diego
Diego

you're still awake

Valentina
Valentina

yes. you too

Diego
Diego

obviously

Valentina
Valentina

Valentina
Valentina

do you think we still fit? the real version of both of us. who we are now

Diego reads the question. He gets up. He walks to the window of his apartment in Valencia and looks at the empty street below. He returns to the table. He picks up the phone. And he writes for three minutes without stopping.

Diego
Diego

I don't know. and I think it's the first time in my life that that answer doesn't seem like a bad sign to me

Diego
Diego

because today we've truly seen each other. and we hadn't done that in a long time

Diego
Diego

the rest remains to be seen

Valentina
Valentina

yes

Valentina
Valentina

remains to be seen

Almost two more hours pass. 02:21. The chat has had no activity for a while. Diego is no longer online. Valentina isn't either. And then Valentina opens the window of her apartment, leans her elbows on the frame, and looks at the city.

Valentina
ValentinaA photo taken from inside a Barcelona apartment, looking out through an open window at the city at night — rooftops and distant lights blurred softly in the dark, the orange glow of the city below, the edge of the window frame visible on one side. No people visible. The sky is a deep blue-black. Charming ink and watercolor painting style, clean lines, vibrant but soft color palette.

Valentina sends the photo without text. Without an emoji. Without anything. She leaves the phone on the windowsill and continues looking at the city. A minute later, the phone vibrates.

Diego

Valentina listens to the audio. Four seconds. She listens to it again. Then she closes the window slowly, without making a noise, as if she didn't want to break something. She sits on the bed. She looks at the ceiling. The city of Barcelona is still out there, lit up, knowing nothing. And Valentina, for the first time in many months, doesn't know what is going to happen — and she isn't afraid.
