Make sense of what you’re practicing
Chinese characters are not the same as words
学校 contains two Chinese characters but is normally one word. A Chinese character count can be exact while a word count depends on segmentation. This tool reports both, using your browser’s Chinese word segmenter and clearly labeling the word count as an estimate.
What is included in each character count?
The Hanzi total counts Unicode Han-script characters, including rare supplementary characters. All-character totals use grapheme clusters when available, so a combined emoji is counted as one visible unit. Whitespace, punctuation, Latin letters and numeric characters have separate metrics.
Choose the right rule for an assignment
Some writing limits count only Hanzi; others include punctuation or all non-space characters. Select the basis required by your assignment. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Different browser segmenters and institutional rules can produce different word or sentence counts.
Use repetition as a vocabulary clue
Frequency lists show the most repeated characters and estimated words. Open one in the Chinese vocabulary hub to explore meanings and examples. Simplified and Traditional forms remain distinct in the counts; this tool does not silently normalize your text.
