Type French accents without a French keyboard
Type or paste your text, place the cursor, then choose an accented letter. Selecting text before choosing a key replaces that selection. Switch to uppercase for É, À, Ç and Œ, then copy your finished text.
Which accent do I need?
- Acute: é, as in café and été.
- Grave: à, è and ù, as in déjà, père and où.
- Circumflex: â, ê, î, ô and û, as in âge, fête and sûr.
- Diaeresis: ë, ï, ü and the rare ÿ, as in Noël, naïf and names such as L’Haÿ-les-Roses.
- Cedilla: ç before a, o or u gives the soft c sound, as in français and garçon.
- Ligatures: œ in cœur and sœur; æ in some borrowed expressions.
Do capitals need accents?
Yes. École, À bientôt and FRANÇAIS keep their accents. They are part of correct spelling and can distinguish words such as ou (or) and où (where).
Does this change my keyboard settings?
No. It inserts characters in the text box only. Copy uses your browser’s clipboard permission; if unavailable, select the text and copy manually. Clearing the box removes this session’s text, so copy anything you want to keep first.
