Accents show which syllable to stress when speaking. Without them, words may be mispronounced or misunderstood.

Correct accent usage is essential for formal Spanish writing and demonstrates language proficiency.

Words stressed on the last syllable get an accent if they end in a vowel, n, or s.

Agudas (Stress on Last Syllable)

Accents distinguish between identical words with different meanings or identify a word as a question.

Diacritical & Question Words

Words stressed on the third-to-last syllable (or earlier) always get a written accent.

Esdrújulas (Stress on 3rd-to-Last)

Words stressed on the second-to-last syllable get an accent if they DO NOT end in a vowel, n, or s.

Always use `primero` for the 1st of the month (e.g., `primero de mayo`).

The core structure is day of month of year. For example, `25 de diciembre de 2024`.

Months (`enero`) and days of the week (`lunes`) are not capitalized.

In writing, you''ll often see the Day/Month/Year format: `25/12/2024` or `25.12.2024`.

Writing the Date

Use `Es la una` only for 1 o''clock. For all other hours, use `Son las...` (e.g., `Son las cinco`).

Add minutes with `y`. For example, `Son las dos y diez`. Use `y cuarto` for :15 and `y media` for :30.

State the next hour and subtract the minutes with `menos`. E.g., 8:50 is `Son las nueve menos diez`.

Use `de la madrugada` (after midnight to 6 AM), `de la mañana` (6 AM to noon), `de la tarde` (noon to 8 PM), and `de la noche` (8 PM to midnight).
