فَجْأَةً، الدَّفُّ يَسْقُطُ عَلَى الأَرْضِ.

Suddenly, the tambourine falls on the floor.

كَانَ اَلْبَحْرُ هَادِئًا، وَلَكِنَّ عَلِيًّا سَمِعَ صَوْتًا تَحْتَ قَدَمَيْهِ.

The sea was calm. But Ali heard a sound under his feet.

بِكُلِّ قُوَّتِهِمَا، وَجَّهَا الْقَارِبَ نَحْوَ الْجَزِيرَةِ.

With all their strength, they steered the boat toward the island.

الطَّرِيقُ يَمُرُّ فَوْقَ الجَبَلِ.

The road passes over the mountain.

هُوَ يَعْرِفُ طَرِيقَ النَّهْرِ.

He knows the way of the river.

فِي اللَّيْلِ البَعِيدِ، كَانَ الشَّابُّ يُوسُفُ يَمْشِي وَحِيدًا فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ.

In the distant night, the young man Yusuf was walking alone in the desert.

تَوَقَّفَتْ يَدُهَا فِي الْهَوَاءِ.

Her hand stopped in mid-air.

بَيْنَ الحِجَارَةِ، تَسْمَعُ لَيْلَى صَوْتًا.

Between the stones, Layla hears a sound.

كَانَا يَذْهَبَانِ إِلَى جُزُرِ فَرَسَانَ، حَيْثُ تَعِيشُ أَسْمَاكٌ كَثِيرَةٌ وَجَمِيلَةٌ.

They were going to the Farasan Islands, where many beautiful fish live.

كَانَ يَعْرِفُ كُلَّ طَرِيقٍ فِي الرِّمَالِ، وَكُلَّ بِئْرِ مَاءٍ بَيْنَ التِّلَالِ.

He knew every path in the sands, and every water well between the hills.

اسْتَمَرَّ فِي الرَّكْضِ حَتَّى رَأَى أَضْوَاءَ القَرْيَةِ فِي الأُفُقِ.

He continued running until he saw the village lights on the horizon.

عِنْدَ الضِّفَّةِ، رَأَى سَلْمَى وَاقِفَةً قُرْبَ الْمَاءِ.

At the bank, he saw Salma standing near the water.

يَقْفِزُ الجَمَلُ فَوْقَ الصَّخْرَةِ بِقُوَّةٍ.

The camel jumps over the rock with strength (powerfully).

عِنْدَ غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ، وَصَلَتْ مَرْيَمُ إِلَى ضِفَّةِ النِّيلِ فِي أَسْوَانَ.

At sunset. Maryam arrived at the bank of the Nile in Aswan.

لَكِنَّ سَلْمَى رَأَتِ الدَّمَ يَتَّجِهُ نَحْوَ الْكُثْبَانِ.

But Salma saw the blood heading toward the dunes.

لَا يَرَى سَامِي الثَّلْجَ الأَبْيَضَ عَلَى القِمَّةِ.

He does not see Sami the white snow on the peak.

تَغَيَّرَتْ مَعَالِمُ الْهَوْرِ تَمَامًا؛ الْقَنَوَاتُ الَّتِي كَانَ يَعْرِفُهَا اخْتَفَتْ تَحْتَ الْمَاءِ، وَظَهَرَتْ طُرُقٌ جَدِيدَةٌ لَمْ يَرَهَا مِنْ قَبْلُ.

The landmarks of the marsh had completely changed; the channels he used to know had disappeared under the water, and new paths appeared that he had never seen before.

صَعِدَا بِبُطْءٍ شَدِيدٍ، مُتَّبِعَيْنِ قَوَاعِدَ السَّلَامَةِ الَّتِي كَادَتْ لَيْلَى أَنْ تَنْسَاهَا، حَتَّى ظَهَرَ الْقَارِبُ أَخِيرًا فَوْقَهُمَا كَبُقْعَةٍ دَاكِنَةٍ عَلَى سَطْحٍ مَا زَالَ مُضْطَرِبًا.

They ascended very slowly, following the safety rules which Layla had almost forgotten, until the boat finally appeared above them as a dark spot on a surface that was still turbulent.

يَجِبُ أَنْ أُنْهِيَ هَذَا الْمَسْحَ الْبَحْرِيَّ الْيَوْمَ.

I must finish this marine survey today.

سَمِعَ يُوسُفُ مِنْ جِيرَانِهِ أَنَّ السُّدُودَ فِي الشَّمَالِ فَتَحَتْ أَبْوَابَهَا بِسَبَبِ الْأَمْطَارِ الْغَزِيرَةِ، وَأَنَّ مَوْجَةً كَبِيرَةً مِنَ الْمَاءِ قَادِمَةٌ نَحْوَ الْأَهْوَارِ.

Yusuf heard from his neighbors that the dams in the north had opened their gates because of the heavy rains, and that a large wave of water was coming toward the marshes.

مَشَتْ سَلْمَى إِلَى اَلشَّاطِئِ، فَرَأَتْ أَمْرًا غَرِيبًا.

Salma walked to the beach, so she saw something strange.

ارْتَفَعَتْ رِمَالٌ دَقِيقَةٌ مِنَ الْقَاعِ، وَبَدَأَ التَّيَّارُ الْقَوِيُّ يَجُرُّهُمَا بِعُنْفٍ نَحْوَ الْأَعْمَاقِ الْمُظْلِمَةِ.

Fine sand rose from the bottom, and the strong current began dragging them violently toward the dark depths.

لَدَيْنَا أَرْبَعُونَ دَقِيقَةً فَقَطْ لِنَصِلَ إِلَى الشِّعَابِ الْمَرْجَانِيَّةِ الْعَمِيقَةِ وَنَعُودَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَشْتَدَّ الرِّيَاحُ، قَالَتْ لَيْلَى وَهِيَ تَضْبِطُ حِزَامَ الْأُكْسِجِينِ بِإِحْكَامٍ.

We have only forty minutes to reach the deep coral reefs and return before the winds strengthen, Layla said as she tightly adjusted her oxygen belt.

مَعَ جَدَّتِهَا تَحْمِلُ الْجَدَّةُ عِقْدًا قَدِيمًا لِلْعِقْدِ صَوْتٌ جَمِيلٌ تَقْتَرِبُ سَارَةُ مِنَ الْكَهْفِ فَجْأَةً يَسْقُطُ الْعِقْدُ فِي الظَّلَامِ تَحْزَنُ الْجَدَّةُ كَثِيرًا تَقُولُ سَارَةُ: لَا تَخَافِي يَا جَدَّتِي

فِي صَبَاحٍ حَارٍّ، وَصَلَتْ سَلْمَى إِلَى مَهْرَجَانِ الطَّعَامِ فِي الْوَاحَةِ.

صَعِدَا بِبُطْءٍ شَدِيدٍ، مُتَّبِعَيْنِ قَوَاعِدَ السَّلَامَةِ الَّتِي كَادَتْ لَيْلَى أَنْ تَنْسَاهَا، حَتَّى ظَهَرَ الْقَارِبُ أَخِيرًا فَوْقَهُمَا كَبُقْعَةٍ دَاكِنَةٍ عَلَى سَطْحٍ مَا زَالَ مُضْطَرِبًا.

زَحَفَا مَعًا عَبْرَ الْعَتَمَةِ حَتَّى وَجَدَا مَلْجَأً ضَيِّقًا تَحْتَ نُتُوءٍ صَخْرِيٍّ بَارِزٍ.

They crawled together through the darkness until they found a narrow shelter under a protruding rocky ledge.

وَصَلَتِ الْقَافِلَةُ إِلَى الْقَرْيَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ بِدَقَائِقَ.

The caravan reached the village minutes before the sun set.
