A little understanding goes a long way

Make sense of what you’re practicing

01

Reading, not translation

東京 becomes toukyou, not “Tokyo” as an English place-name translation. This tool shows how Japanese is read; it does not translate sentence meanings.

02

A practical romanization

Readings use familiar Hepburn consonants: shi, chi, tsu and fu. Long vowels retain kana spelling, so こう is kou and コーヒー is koohii. This preserves information for learners instead of silently dropping long vowels.

03

Particles and word breaks

は, へ and を become wa, e and o when the analyzer identifies them as particles. Optional spaces follow dictionary word boundaries, which may separate endings. Names and ambiguous readings can be corrected in the review panel.
