Make both replacements visible
Do il libro a Marco. → Glielo do.
Il libro → lo (what is given). A Marco → gli (to whom). Gli + lo becomes glielo, placed before the conjugated verb.
This builds the pronoun combination. Position and agreement still depend on the complete sentence.
Find what the pronoun replaces.
Ask what is affected, to whom something is directed, or which place or quantity is already understood.
Compro le mele. → Le compro.
I buy the apples. → I buy them.
Le mele answers “what do I buy?” Le replaces a feminine plural direct object.
