A little understanding goes a long way

Make sense of what you’re practicing

01

Verbs and adjectives both conjugate

Korean descriptive predicates such as 좋다 (be good) take endings much like action verbs. Do not add an English-style ‘is’ to 좋아요. The ending already forms a complete predicate.

02

Politeness and honorification differ

요 makes speech polite to the listener. -(으)시- honours the person being discussed. 가요 and 가세요 are both polite, but only the latter marks an honoured subject. Special words such as 드시다 and 주무시다 also matter.

03

Learn irregularity with the word

듣다 becomes 들어요, but 받다 becomes 받아요. 돕다 becomes 도와요, while 입다 becomes 입어요. A final ㄷ or ㅂ alone does not tell you whether a word is irregular; this lookup uses selected lexical patterns.
